IoD honours Bay of Plenty project manager as an emerging director with strong leadership potential
Pukehina’s Frances Bates-Crisp has been named the Institute of Directors (IoD) Bay of Plenty branch emerging director for 2020.
Frances is a programme director for TRILITY, a trans-Tasman water and environmental services company. She is an award-winning project manager with a background in engineering, commercial development and management.
An Associate of the IoD, she has experienced professional governance through her executive roles reporting to boards and working with board subcommittees. In the community, Francis is a member of beekeepers association the Rotorua Honeybees Club and a former treasurer of the Paturoa Bay Ratepayers and Residents’ Association.
In choosing Frances for this award, the Bay of Plenty judges said she has a well-rounded background in business and demonstrable evidence of self-motivation, enthusiasm for challenge and leadership skills. They also singled out her commitment to understanding cultural values as an important ingredient of good governance.
“Frances responded well to questions about Te Ao Māori and provided a relevant water sector example, with a strong sense of community and societal impact. This comes from her strong belief that recognising cultural values is integral to business and that this should be ‘ingrained’ at board level,” the judges said.
“She is articulate, clear-headed and justifiably confident. Frances has the attributes to be an excellent director and with the right opportunities could become a significant contributor to governance.”
As the BoP emerging director 2020, Frances will have the opportunity to sit on the board of the Acorn Foundation charitable fund for 12 months and become a member of the local branch committee of the IoD.
She says she relishes challenges that require creative and flexible thinking and looks forward to bringing her practical project-based perspective to board discussions.
“The emerging director award is an unparalleled opportunity to receive mentoring from an established director, acquire invaluable knowledge and examples of good governance, and has the potential to open opportunities to positively contribute in the governance arena,” Frances says.
