The First Break panel discussion and networking event is designed around sharing useful steps, tips and trends for those in the planning, early and emerging stages of their governance journey. The panel of experienced directors will their director journey and how they transitioned into governance — navigating transitions, developing board portfolios, and seizing opportunities.
Following the panel discussion, you will have the opportunity to network with senior directors over drinks and canapés.
The theme for the panel discussion, Governance across not-for-profit, public and private sectors, provides conversation cohesion.

They’ll discuss the evolving governance landscape, key insights on board-executive dynamics, and emerging trends. Whether you're starting out or looking to deepen your expertise, this discussion will provide fresh insights and practical takeaways.

Nicola is an experienced director with a strong background in technology, commercial management, and governance across both public and private sectors. She has held leadership roles at Xero, Skype, and Tweetdeck, driving innovation, digital transformation, and data-led strategies.
A Chartered Member of the NZ Institute of Directors and the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Nicola brings governance expertise across diverse industries. She currently serves as a director on the boards of Kordia, REINZ, Realestate.co.nz, NZFSG, Loan Market Group (AU), and the University of Otago.

Monique is a widely accomplished Independent Director and Business Advisor who leads through change with creativity, positivity, empathy and passion. Managing a portfolio of governance roles along with a business advisory consultancy she founded, Caribou, Monique is driven by a desire for better business and better stakeholder outcomes, for a better tomorrow.
Currently she is an Independent Director and Deputy Chair of NZ Home Loans, the Independent Chair of 30 Seconds Group, an Independent Director of Harmoney Corporation and Ingenium Group (Younity). She is also a Trustee of the NZ Portrait Gallery and Chair of the Art Committee at The Northern Club. A previous Director of Unitec NZ Limited, Manukau Institute of Technology Limited, DEC International, Lotto NZ and SPCA Auckland, Monique has held leadership roles in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Monique’s experience provides a unique perspective and spans a wide range of organisations from NFPs, start-ups, local and central government, SME to large corporates, privately owned to listed, along with diverse industries and complexities.

Julian is an independent director with 15 years governance experience having retired from his executive career in 2019 as the Chief Customer Officer for Meridian Energy.
His executive career saw him hold several senior executive roles in the utilities, internet/digital, financial services, telecommunications sectors as well as central government.
Julian is a chartered member of the Institute of Directors, an independent director for Watercare Services Limited in Auckland and is a board trustee for the Look Good Feel Better cancer charity. He also sits on the advisory board for Vadacom Limited, is the group secretary for the Northland Corporate Group and chair’s the IoD’s Te Tai Tokerau Northland subcommittee.
A strategy and customer expert with extensive marketing and corporate affairs credentials, Julian is deeply experienced in digital business.
He holds an LLB and BCom from the University of Auckland and recently completed a certificate in cybersecurity risk governance at Harvard University
Julian is especially interested in emerging governance trends and development around climate change, cybersecurity, Agile governance, digital business transformation and capital project oversight.

Simone is an experienced independent director, chair and CEO. Her diverse career spans a range of organisations from corporate to SOE, in multiple industries including technology, financial services, telco and retail. Her specialisation is in data, technology and digital transformation.
She has held various governance roles including CEO and executive director of ASX listed digital transformation specialists Asia Pacific Digital. Previously independent director and chair remuneration committee Just Water Ltd and Chair New Zealand Marketing Association. Simone has served on the Institute of Directors’ Auckland branch committee since 2013 and is a member of New Zealand Global Women.
