Insights from Te Ōhanga Māori

Overview

The Māori economy is a significant and increasingly important contributor to the wider economy of Aotearoa, as detailed in the recently released Te Ōhanga Māori 2018 BERL report.

Hillmarè Schulze, Chief Economist at BERL, joined us to share the ngā kaupapa matua (key themes) of the report followed by panel discussion with Christian Hawkesby (RBNZ), Riria Te Kanawa (KPMG) and Joe Hanita (Parininihi ki Waitotara ) on the insights and learnings for NZ Inc from the people centric intergenerational and integrated decision making practiced in Te Ao Māori.

Hillmare Schulze

Hillmarè Schulze is the Chief Economist at BERL.  She draws on her experience, being a practising economist for more than 30 years across the globe.  She has worked in multilateral and bilateral organisations, private and government sector. She is currently heading BERL, and values the credible and independent voice that the team brings to the economic and policy dialogue in New Zealand. She is a strong supporter of regional economic development, the Māori economy and making sure that the next generation has the tools to be productive global citizens. Prior to joining BERL, Hillmarè worked for Te Puni Kōkri and the then Department of Labour. She moved to New Zealand in 2016, from the World Bank, where she worked as a senior economist focussed on 47 African countries.  She believes that economic development is a means to an end, and definitely not the end itself. Economic development should support families and communities to grow and thrive.

Christian Hawkesby MInstD

Christian is Assistant Governor and General Manager of Economics, Financial Markets and Banking.

He is responsible for formulating monetary policy, providing liquidity in financial markets, managing the foreign reserves, operating interbank payment and settlement systems, and the circulation of currency.

Prior to taking up the role in 2019, Christian was part of the team that established Harbour Asset Management, which was awarded Morningstar New Zealand Fund Manager of the Year in 2014, 2016 and 2017. He also spent 9 years at the Bank of England, where he held a range of senior positions.

Riria (Missy) Te Kanawa

Riria is a management consultant and qualified chartered accountant with a strong interest in design thinking as a valuable tool for rethinking and reimagining not only products and services but strategy, culture, organisation design and approaches in general. She is passionate about working with Maori and considering how business approaches and measures of success can better reflect our Maori world view as well pursue the perfect balance between people, plant and putea.

Joe Hanita MInstD

Joe (Ngāti Kuia, Rangitāne, Ngāti Kahungunu) was born in the Wairarapa, but grew up in the Waikato. Joe has over 18 years financial and management experience in both public practice and the public sector, working across rural and urban, mid-tier and big four chartered accounting practices, and in health and education sectors. He is currently CFO Parininihi Ki Waitotara Incorporation, an associate director of Wakatū Incorporation and sits on the Audit and Risk Committee for Ātihau Whanganui Incorporation.He is a Māori voice on the External Reporting Advisory Panel, which has a role to inform and guide the New Zealand External Reporting Board on the development of New Zealand Financial Reporting Standards.Joe is a member of the IoD and was the inaugural Emerging Director Award Recipient for the IoD Taranaki Branch in 2018.
