Governance news bites – 26 July

We’ve curated some key media articles focused on governance published during the past two weeks:

  • Risk management in US financial institutions in the spotlight: News broke this week with secret bank ratings showing half of the biggest banks in the United States have less than desirable operational risk management approaches and systems. This continues to be a wake-up call in light of the bank collapses in the US in recent years.
  • ESG, cyber security and NZX market developments in the spotlight: A new analysis from Computershare and Georgeson, with findings and insights from Annual Shareholder Meetings (ASMs), put the spotlight on ESG and how firms are dealing with this (notably on climate-related disclosures); ongoing issues with risk management and cyber security; and ongoing changes to NZX listing rules and governance expectations, notably on remuneration disclosures. The analysis provides insights into developments in other key markets as well.
  • The use case for AI (and the pitfalls):  For individual directors, it always helps to have tangible examples, in this case in relation to AI.  While not directly comparable to the role directors play, the insights from a GP in using AI for patient notes provides a pragmatic view about AI usage.
