Queenstown Medical Centre (QMC) has been operating since 1970 and it has a proud history of patient-centred innovation to serve the community’s health needs. Today, QMC has over 20,000 enrolled patients across four sites in the Wakatipu basin. It is the third largest independently owned practice in New Zealand with approximately 80 staff and more than $10M annual revenue.

QMC has 11 shareholders, all of whom are staff members. It is currently governed by four shareholder-elected Directors and an appointed independent Chair.

The Board signs off the QMC strategy and it is implemented by a CEO and management team. It’s an exciting strategy, which will benefit from more commercial governance.

Particular skills/competencies sought

Independent Directors are expected to understand the priorities of QMC’s shareholders and align with our community orientation. They require a willingness to listen and understand the complexities of health, especially the funding model and funding streams.

Directors are expected to meet all the essential and desirable attributes outlined on pages 6-7 of the New Zealand Institute of Directors Competency Framework. An understanding of the application of Te Tiriti to health in NZ is desirable.

Commitment required

In total, expect to contribute a minimum of 60 hours per year excluding travel. This includes approx. eight meetings per year (2.5 hours long) plus an AGM and the occasional virtual meeting.

Term

There is no constitutional tenure but likely a review by the Chair and elected Directors every three years. There is no guarantee at any time of ongoing tenure.

Geographical Considerations

Applicants location should be driving distance or one plane flight from Queenstown.
