Welcome to the revolution! Chat GPT is the technology that’s been making waves and its use is fast advancing in the business world. If you’re curious about Chat GPT and its impact on business, we invite you to join the University of Auckland Business School and the Auckland Branch of the Institute of Directors at this co-hosted event.

During this event, you’ll have the opportunity to hear from leading academics, business and AI/tech leaders, about the benefits and concerns of Chat GPT and other similar software. As Chat GPT dominates news headlines worldwide, with its impact extending beyond classrooms to various industries, many business leaders and boards are keeping a close eye on the technology, and the opportunities and threats it provides.

This event will be insightful and informative for those keen to explore how ChatGPT can be leveraged to drive innovation and productivity. Bring your questions for the panel.

Dr Alex Sims

Dr Alex Sims is an Associate Professor in the Department of Commercial Law at the University of Auckland Business School. Alex’s research areas cross law, technology and policy and include blockchain, decentralised autonomous organisations (DAOs), intellectual property and consumer law. In particular, she specialises in paradigm shifts, which includes blockchain, ChatGPT and other AI tools. She is a member of Blockchain NZ’s Executive Committee.

Prior governance roles include Consumer NZ board and the University of Auckland Council.

Frith Tweedie

Frith is a Principal Consultant at Simply Privacy, where she helps private and public sector clients develop good privacy and responsible AI practices.

She has over 20 years’ experience in privacy, technology and IP law and has a particular interest in the intersection between digital technologies, privacy and AI ethics. During her time as General Counsel and Chief Privacy Office at Auror, Frith developed and implemented Auror’s Responsible AI framework. Before that, she was an Associate Partner at EY Law leading the Australian and New Zealand Digital Law teams. Frith is on the Executive Committee of the AI Forum NZ and the AU-NZ Advisory Board of the International Association of Privacy Professional (IAPP).

Dr Helen Lu

Dr Helen Lu is the FinTech specialisation lead of the Master of Business Analytics programme at the University of Auckland. Her research interests focus on applying machine learning techniques to problems in finance and business. She is currently teaching Data Analytics for FinTech and Modern Corporate Finance at the postgraduate level.

Dr Lu worked as an investment banker on equity issuance and M&A deals for Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank before returning to academia. She holds an MBA from London Business School, a Master of Economics degree from Peking University and a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from Northern Jiaotong University. Dr Lu is a founding member of the New Zealand Artificial Intelligence Researchers Association.

Richard McLean

Richard is an experienced Chair and chartered member of the IOD, having been a member since 2007. Following on from an executive and entrepreneurial career in the technology sector, his governance career spans 16 years and includes a range of privately held New Zealand businesses operating in different global markets. Richard is also a co-founder and Executive Chair of ElementX Ltd, a New Zealand based AI Engineering company operating in the areas of Conversational AI, Computer Vision and Data Science. 

With a personal and professional interest in the intersection of good governance practice and the rapid onset of AI technologies, Richard has published a blog series on the topic intended as a helpful resource for directors looking to improve their understanding and their participation in governance discussions that relate to AI technologies. 

Will Mace (Moderator)

In 15 years as a journalist Will Mace has covered everything from finance company collapses to Europe’s largest M&A transactions, and now finds himself fascinated by New Zealand’s innovators and entrepreneurs, covering the technology sector as a senior journalist for the National Business Review.

In the two years since his return from London he’s written in-depth coverage of the metaverse, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, the telecommunications sector, and New Zealand’s place in the global tech talent market. His recent feature on ChatGPT’s relevance for Kiwi businesses considered the risks and opportunities inherent in increasingly user-friendly AI, including the ways Large Language Models might be customised and specialised for specific business uses in the future.
