Dr Andreas Barckow

Chair of the International Accounting Standards Board

Dr Andreas Barckow is an experienced and highly regarded leader in the field of international accounting. From 2015 to 2021, he served as President of the Accounting Standards Committee of Germany (Deutsches Rechnungslegungs Standards Committee e.V.).

He has been an active participant in numerous advisory bodies to the IFRS Foundation and the IASB, including membership of the IASB’s Accounting Standards Advisory Forum and the IFRS Advisory Council. Moreover, he is an acknowledged expert in IFRS Standards, having previously served as the lead technical partner for financial reporting matters in the German member firm of Deloitte.

Dr Barckow holds a Diploma and Doctorate degree in Business Administration from the University of Paderborn and is an Honorary Professor at WHU Otto Beisheim School of Management. 

He started his term as Chair of the International Accounting Standards Board in July 2021.

Kirsten Patterson (KP)

KP is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Directors. She is a qualified lawyer and a Distinguished Fellow of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand Her governance roles include:

- Co-deputy Chair, Global Network of Directors Institutes (GNDI)
- Chair, Brian Picot Ethical Leadership advisory board
- Director, NZ Rugby Foundation
- Trustee, Voices of Hope
- Board member, XRAP Advisory Panel, External Reporting Board (XRB)
- Board member, Wellington Homeless Women’s Trust. 

With extensive governance and leadership experience, she is actively involved in community initiatives.

A strong advocate of diversity, KP was also a founding member of Global Women’s ‘Champions for Change’, a group of senior executives and directors who commit to diversity in the workplace, and a founding member of WiSPA, an organisation promoting women in sport, and mentors a number of business leaders.

Matt Whineray

Chief Executive, New Zealand Super Fund

Matt was appointed Chief Executive Officer 1 July 2018. He joined the Guardians in May 2008 as General Manager, Private Markets. In 2014 Matt became Chief Investment Officer.  Before joining the Guardians, Matt was at Credit Suisse (Hong Kong) where he was Head of Financial Sponsor Coverage for non-Japan Asia. Prior to this, he was a Managing Director at First NZ Capital in New Zealand and a Vice President at Credit Suisse First Boston in New York. Matt began his career as a Barrister and Solicitor with Russell McVeagh in Auckland.

Matt is a Director of Netball New Zealand and of Toitu Tahua, the Centre for Sustainable Finance. Matt has previously served as Co-Chair of the Aotearoa Circle’s Sustainable Finance Forum, a member of the World Economic Forum General Agenda Council on the Future of Investing, and as Chair of the InZone Education Foundation.

Michele Embling

Chair of the External Reporting Board

Michele is an independent director and current Chair of the External Reporting Board (XRB), the Independent Crown Entity responsible for establishing New Zealand’s financial reporting strategy and building trust in its capital markets. The XRB is also proud to be playing its part in addressing climate change and is currently working at pace to establish a climate-related disclosure framework for Aotearoa New Zealand.

Michele is also a Board Member of Toitū Tahua - The Centre for Sustainable Finance. The Centre was established to implement the Sustainable Finance Forum’s 2030 roadmap for a sustainable financial system. Comprising representatives from banks, insurance companies, industry, Māori businesses and iwi, professional services, civil society, academia, and Government, the Sustainable Finance Forum is a unique partnership of public and private sector leaders committed to restoring New Zealand’s natural capital.

Nick Tuffley

ASB Chief Economist

Nick Tuffley was appointed as ASB’s Chief Economist in January 2007, having previously worked at Westpac and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.  Nick studied at Canterbury University, graduating with a Master of Commerce in Economics. 

He and the rest of the Economics team provide regular analysis of economic developments and the outlook through written publications and media comments.  Their key objective is to help the bank’s clients make better-informed business and personal finance decisions.  The Economics team has won 3 Consensus Economics Forecast Accuracy Awards for their NZ forecasts.

Nick speaks at a variety of functions large and small from gatherings of corporate customers, through industry conferences, to large cocktail functions for customers.  He has spoken in shearing sheds, wineries, art galleries, the Air Force museum, and ambulance stations.  And of course, in recent years he has spent a lot of time Zooming into people’s screens.
