Overview

Not-for-profit governance requires special skills. It is a unique governance environment with its own legislation and its own financial requirements. However, it is also an environment very much underpinned by whanaungatanga – an environment where collaborative leadership is imperative and there are huge opportunities to support each other.

Join experienced chairs Dame Jo Brosnahan and Martin Snedden, together with professional advisor Jodi Newth of KPMG and Silvia McPherson of Dentons. They’ll talk about how to avoid pitfalls in the NFP space that can occur for even experienced directors, and how to create new opportunities for your board.

Dame Jo Brosnahan

CFInstD DNZM QSO

Jo is an experienced board chair in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors, with a particular passion and expertise for leadership and governance.  She is currently Chair of Maritime New Zealand (the nation’s maritime agency), Chair of Harrison Grierson (NZ urban engineering and planning consultancy), and Chair of the Ambassadors for Leadership NZ.  Past governance roles over a range of sectors have included Chair of Northpower Fibre (ultra-fast broadband), Chair of Landcare Research, the board of Housing New Zealand, Chair of Taitokerau Education Trust the board of the Auckland Museum and the Advisory Board for the Centre for Brain Research.

Jo is the founder of Leadership New Zealand, which has over 700 alumni across the diversity of NZ, was Chair of the LNZ Trust for more than a decade and now chairs the ambassadors.  As a Harkness Fellow and Aspen Scholar, Jo spent a year researching leadership in the USA.  She researches and writes about leadership, develops and facilitates leadership and governance programmes, and undertakes board reviews.

Jo believes that governance is leadership in action and for New Zealand to succeed, inspiring and capable leaders are required at both governance and executive levels.

After various careers playing professional cricketer, partner in a small family law firm, then CEO roles with New Zealand Cricket, Rugby World Cup 2011, and Tourism, Martin is spending his twilight years immersed in NFP governance. He currently chairs three NFP boards – Heart of the City, Business Events Industry Aotearoa, and Cycling NZ.

Over the last three years, with the backing of Sport NZ, he has created and led a Sport & Active Play Sector Governance Community Project, helping a community of 45 national sport (NSO) and regional sport trust (RST) board chairs get to know each other and share their experience on governance topics of common interest.
