A practical, interactive workshop exploring the four pillars and best practice governance
The objective of this session is to assist the development of emerging directors through an introduction to governance, building governance awareness in an interactive environment. Experienced directors will guide discussions around the Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice which provides essential guidance on best practice governance, global trends and the contemporary operating environment in New Zealand.
On completion, participants will have a sound fundamental understanding of governance best practice, boosting their confidence to undertake more formal director training such as the one-day Essentials courses for aspiring and new directors.
Preparation
A workbook will be emailed two weeks prior and it is expected of each participant to familiarise themselves with the reading and exercises around each of the Pillars (please bring your workbook – either electronic or hardcopy – to the session).
Who should register?
The workshop is ideally suited for mid to senior-level executives and new directors on commercial, not-for-profit (NFP) and Crown-owned boards. It will provide a unique opportunity to learn from a number of New Zealand’s senior director practitioners, share experience and network with other like-minded business people. You should ideally have some governance experience, but not have completed any of the IoD governance development courses.
The session is limited to 28 participants. Drinks and light dinner will be served.

With extensive governance, corporate and commissioner experience, coupled with strong accounting skills and business acumen Bev understands the varying pressures that emerge within decision-making environments that have oversight obligations; both from a senior management perspective, as a Chair and as a Board Member.
Her governance related activities are extensive, from completing a Doctorate in Governance, establishing boards, educating potential and current board members, evaluating existing boards and running her own three companies. Over the past twenty years she has established a wide variety of governing boards, been a board member on both commercial and community orientated boards and during her governance journey has held the position of chair on a number of occasions.
As a distinctive Fellow of the Institute of Directors, she believes that the world of governance is currently facing considerable challenges as the environment in which boards operate experience both social, economic, and environmental challenges. These, she says, place additional emphasis on the behaviour of board members; not only to keep up to date on marketplace activity as well as procedural changes, but to ensure ethical behaviour is central to the collective decision-making capability of boards. By acknowledging that “accountability” its centre to governing ethically she advocates boards, and their board members can become more knowledgeable, adaptable, and professional.
