Hosted by the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum and the Institute of Directors, join us as you hear from Dr Ian Norton, Managing Director of Respond Global, based in Australia. Dr Norton was the head of WHO’s Emergency Medical Team Initiative from 2014-20 and led responses to Ebola, Diphtheria and Measles outbreaks, as well as other natural disasters.  Dr Norton will be joined by Sheridan Broadbent, Deputy Chair, and Francois Barton, Executive Director of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum. They will discuss:  

  • The Australian experience of the Omicron wave – what can NZ organisations learn?
  • COVID-19 controls – what do we need to change and what can we keep as we look ahead to a large Omicron wave
  • How directors can support their CEOs and organisations as Omicron case numbers surge

There will also be time for questions throughout the session.

Dr Ian Norton

Dr Ian Norton, founder and Managing Director of Respond Global, is a specialist emergency physician and an expert in coordinating emergency health responses to disease outbreaks and disasters. He holds post-graduate qualifications in Surgery, International Health and Tropical Medicine.

Ian was head of the WHO’s Emergency Medical Team (EMT) Initiative in Geneva from 2014-20. During this time, he led responses to Ebola, Diphtheria and Measles outbreaks as well as to earthquakes, cyclones, and war zones. Ian was awarded the WHO Director General’s Staff Excellence Medal for his efforts in coordinating 130 health response teams to the Nepalese earthquake in 2015.

Ian is the lead author of the current WHO Global Classification and Standards that governs how international medical teams deploy and respond to disasters.

Previous to the WHO, Ian led the creation of disaster response teams in Australia and became the Director of Disaster Preparedness and Response at the National Critical Care & Trauma Response Centre (NCCTRC) in Darwin.

Sheridan Broadbent CMInstD

Sheridan Broadbent is a New Zealand based professional director and business advisor.  She has been working in Chief Executive, Executive and governance roles in the infrastructure, technology and energy sectors for more than 20 years.

Presently she is the Deputy Chair of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum, Chair of mission critical network services provider Kordia Group, a director of NZX-listed gentailer Trustpower Limited, a director of workplace safety solutions provider SaferMe and is a member of the Cyber Security Advisory Committee to the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.  In addition, Sheridan provides shareholder and founder advisory services to small to medium size enterprises and start-ups in the technology and infrastructure sectors.

Francois Barton MinstD

Francois Barton is the Executive Director of the Business Leaders’ Health and Safety Forum. Prior to joining the Forum Francois established and ran WorkSafe NZ’s national programme team, which has delivered major safety campaigns in construction, agriculture, forestry and manufacturing. He previously held roles at MBIE - including being involved in early discussions that led to the development of the Canterbury Safety Rebuild Charter - and at the Department of Labour, where he was part of the team that set up the Forum in 2010.
