Following the AGM, we are honoured to host a fireside chat with Distinguished Fellow John Ward. A highly respected governance leader, John has held directorships across finance, education, tourism, and commercial sectors, including serving as Chancellor of the University of Otago and Chair of SBS Bank.
In this engaging conversation, John will share insights from his decades-long governance career, lessons learned from key leadership roles, and his perspectives on the evolving governance landscape.

John Ward is a Chartered Accountant and Commerce graduate of the University of Otago. After working internationally in London, New York, and Johannesburg, he returned to Invercargill in 1980. He spent 20 years as a partner with KPMG and Ward Wilson before shifting his focus to governance, capital markets, private equity and community projects. His directorships and governance roles span public and private companies, trusts and investment entities in New Zealand and Australia.
John played a key role in resisting the Westpac takeover of SBS Bank in 1991 and later served as its Chair for 10 years. He has held other significant governance roles, including Chair of Finance Now Ltd, H&J Smith Ltd, and A J Hackett Bungy. Within the education sector, he served on the SIT board and was Chancellor of the University of Otago from 2009 to 2017, where he also chaired the Finance and Budget Committee and Otago Innovation Ltd for lengthy terms. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by the University of Otago in 2018 and in 2020 was elected to the University’s Court of Benefactors.
A strong advocate for the southern community, John has chaired and been involved with various charitable entities, including as Patron of the LSV organisation. He is a Life Member of the Otago Cricket Association, the Invercargill Marist Cricket Club and the University of Otago Rowing Club. He was also a founding Trustee of the Carisbrook Stadium Trust, which developed Forsyth Barr Stadium.
John and his wife Sue now reside in Auckland where governance roles include directorships in the Australian and NZ business of Milford Asset Management Ltd.
