Overview

The next generation of governance leaders are bringing diversity and positive transformation to boardrooms across New Zealand. 
  
Panellists will discuss how they got their first roles, insights into the workings of an effective board, challenges they’ve faced, key lessons learned as well as the advice they’d give their younger selves.

Stefan Speller

MInstD

Stefan is a governance director, starting more than a decade ago in board roles at 20 years old and his first chair role at 26. He is a Senior Advisor in a central government department, columnist, and speaker and panellist.  

He has previously worked as a Ministerial and Executive Services Advisor for several Cabinet portfolios and is studying law at Victoria University and organisational analysis with Stanford University. 

Stefan is a thought leader and commentator on governance, community leadership, technology, and local government. 

Caroline Tate

Caroline Tate is on the Touch Compass Board and comes with a background in law, a Master of Business Administration and a passion for the arts.  

A guest lecturer, career coach and legal mentor, she is excited to use her skills to further streamline TC’s processes and strategic vision.
 
Caroline was recently Chair and Board Member of Te Manawa Museums Trust, an organisation that combines art, science, and history to create a museum beyond boundaries. 

Carl Bates

CFInstD

Born, raised and educated in Whanganui Carl is an accountant by profession. Appointed to his first directorship of a specialised aged care facility at the age of 18, he became a director of Arena Manawatu and a council member of UCOL the following year. 

Carl later built a professional services firm based in Africa, with clients here in New Zealand, Australia and around the world. This gave him the opportunity to serve as a director or chairman for many companies across a range of industries. These have included businesses in the primary industries, animal health, food safety and manufacturing, retail, health, education and other sectors.  

Carl was admitted as a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors New Zealand in March 2022 and was elected to Parliament as the MP for Whanganui in October 2023. 

Suse Reynolds

MInstD

Suse Reynolds was a founding member of the AANZ Council joining at its inception in 2008. She took up the Executive Director role in 2012, transitioning to Chair in 2020 and stepping down from this role at the end of March 2024. 

In 2005 Suse helped to found AngelHQ, the Wellington region’s angel network and remains on the Board. Today AngelHQ has about 100 members and has invested over $50m into 150+ high-growth startup companies. 

An active angel investor, Suse has over 30 ventures in her portfolio and currently chairs Narrative Muse, a startup bringing representation and belonging to entertainment.  

Suse Chairs the Wellington branch of the Institute of Directors and is on the National Council. 

Suse recently stepped down from the board of CreativeHQ and as a trustee for Project Crimson Trust. Suse was the Deputy Chair of the Government appointed Startup Advisors Council which released the Upstart Nation Report in August 2023.
