Directors need to thrive rather than just survive in today’s disruptive and challenging environment; to help navigate through these volatile and uncertain times the Institute of Directors’ (IoD) cornerstone publication has been updated to reflect today’s new normal.

“We have the opportunity, and the obligation, to shape our future. As directors; we have to think long term, to lead our organisations to adapt and respond in a rapidly changing world,” Institute of Directors CEO Kirsten Patterson says.

“There has never been a more exciting and challenging time to be a director.”

The IoD’s Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice is a comprehensive guide for people serving in governance roles. The latest refresh, released to IoD members today, builds on the knowledge bank of previous editions with new sections on sustainability, human rights in business, state sector governance and Māori-owned entities. It also picks up on global trends relating to stakeholder engagement, board diversity and technology and information governance.

An enhanced digital version will ensure IoD members have access to the latest governance best practice guidance and resources, at their fingertips, whenever they need it.

“The landscape in which organisations are operating are demanding and constantly changing,” IoD Manager Governance Leadership Centre Felicity Caird says.

“Globalisation, geopolitics, rapid advancements in technology, disruption to business models, climate change and shifting demographics are contributing factors which today’s directors need to have on their agenda.

“Using this guide will help directors lead governance, face the challenges and grasp the opportunities of tomorrow. This means going beyond a compliance approach, instead aspiring to meet the highest standards of the profession.”

The Four Pillars provides a sound grounding in governance, practical guidance and interpretation of legislation, the contemporary operating environment and global trends in governance best practice.

“Governance is about planning for the future, it’s about shaping the future,” Patterson says.

“The Institute of Directors is committed to driving excellence in governance and keeping directors at the forefront of governance development and thinking. The Four Pillars of Governance Best Practice aims to equip and inspire directors with the knowledge, research, tools, and education to lead businesses for sustainable success.”
